Working Culture Comparison: Hong Kong vs. London

2/25/20251 min read

I have attended two product events regularly, observing how big corporations and startups showcase different workplace cultures. As someone who has worked in both Hong Kong (in a private listed company) and London (in a medium-sized, mature startup), I've noticed significant differences in work environments. 👀

Demographic and Language Differences 🗣️

Hong Kong 🇭🇰

  • Demographic: Less diverse, predominantly Hong Kong locals and mainland Chinese

  • Language: Cantonese for daily conversation, written communication mostly in English (🇭🇰 Not knowing Cantonese can make understanding workplace dynamics challenging. Speaking the same language makes a huge different)

London 🇬🇧

  • Demographic: Highly diverse, with white, Black, Asian, and European populations

  • Language: 100% English (havent heard any speaking Welsh yet)

Work-Life Balance 💼

Hong Kong Work Culture

  • Always "on": Constant work connectivity

  • Limited work-life separation

  • Minimal flexibility for family care or health conditions

  • Relationship management is critical

  • Decision-making can be slow, require approval all the time

  • Corporate culture often feels superficial

  • Hierarchical structures are prominent

London Work Culture

  • Strict work-hour boundaries

  • Genuine time off during holidays, flexible working hours

  • High trust in remote and hybrid working models

  • Flexible sick leave policies

  • Mental health and family care prioritised

  • More focus on work quality over relationship management

Workplace Interaction Styles

Corporate Hong Kong

  • Relationship-building is crucial

  • After-work socialising expected

  • More outsourcing and vendor work

  • Inter-team dynamics influenced by potential conflicts

  • Communication-driven progression

  • Hierarchical relationships important

London (Startups/Medium Companies)

  • Open cross-team communication

  • Informal networking (e.g., coffee chats)

  • Merit and work quality focused

  • Less vendor-dependent

  • Authentic company culture

  • Recruitment from diverse backgrounds (tech, consultancy)

⭐️Starting my career in Hong Kong provided valuable experience in high-stress, intense working environments. The transition to London revealed a more balanced, opportunity-rich professional landscape.

London's Professional Advantages

  • Relaxed work-life balance

  • Diverse workforce from global backgrounds

  • Varied industry opportunities

  • Skill and experience valued over educational background

  • Ample networking and professional development events

The BNO visa opened doors to my international work experience. I highly recommend working abroad, as it expands professional networks, personal growth, and cultural understanding.
