Running has become more than just a fitness trend - it's a lifestyle, especially in a city like London with its vibrant racing scene. My half marathon journey began unexpectedly in September 2022 when I volunteered at a running event, never imagining I'd be crossing the finish line myself just a year later. 🥹
The Unexpected Running Journey 🏃🏻♀️
My running story started with an unexpected gift - a pair of Hoka running shoes from my sister. With London's beautiful spring weather and countless parks, I couldn't let these shoes go to waste. My first 5k was almost a spontaneous decision, driven by the rare, breezy spring day and a brand new pair of shoes.
Why Half Marathon?
You might wonder why I chose a half marathon over a 10k. Simple - I was already comfortably running 10k during my regular runs.🙂🙃 Why not push my limits? 💨While many runners use apps like Runna for training plans, I took a more personal approach. My goal wasn't about achieving a specific time, but simply crossing the finish line and setting my first personal best (PB).😎
Some thoughts / learnings 💭
1. Invest in Good Running Shoes 👟
A quality pair of running shoes can make or break your training. My Hoka shoes (cannot remember which model. The one I got is 1 size up as well.) with their cushioned soles have been a game-changer for long-distance running.(Thanks Sis 💋) Pro tip: If you're budget-conscious, consider last season's models from stores like SportShoes - they're just as effective but significantly cheaper.
2. Plan and Commit
I used a Muji calendar to map out my three-month training plan. This visual reminder helped me track weekly goals and maintain consistency. London's lovely summers can be distracting, but having a structured plan allowed me to balance training with social activities.
3. Add Motivation: Charity Running
Running for a cause added an extra layer of motivation. By signing up for a charity run and sharing my fundraising link, I created accountability. The thought of letting down my sponsors became a powerful motivator to stick to my training.
4. Consistency is Key ☀️🌧️⛈️❄️☁️
Training doesn't pause for weather(especially in London🇬🇧) . I ran in rain, sunshine, and cloudy days, understanding that race day conditions are unpredictable. Consistent training builds endurance and confidence.😇
5. Join a Running Community
Running clubs like Midnight Runners (click to check my recommendations 😝) transformed my training from a solitary activity to a social experience. Regular group runs not only made training more enjoyable but also connected me with runners preparing for similar races.
‼️This training plan is purely personal. 🚨 Some athletes skip structured training altogether, relying on existing fitness from activities like swimming or gym workouts.
Crossing that finish line wasn't just about achieving a PB - it was about personal growth, discipline, and discovering a newfound passion. My hope is that by sharing this journey, I'll inspire others to lace up their shoes and explore the transformative world of running.
